South Lanarkshire Council is celebrating the International Day of Older Persons which takes place today.

Seniors Together, a council project aimed at improving the quality of life for older people living in South Lanarkshire, have created a banner which is on display at council headquarters in Hamilton.

International Day of Older Persons was created by the United Nations in 1990, and this year’s UK theme is: Building Belonging: Celebrating the power of our social connections

The council’s Champion for Older People, Councillor Eileen Logan, said: “We are delighted to once again be supporting International Day of Older Persons.

“It’s important to recognise the invaluable contribution older people make to society, and to ensure they can live life to the full and keep themselves well in old age.

“Seniors Together continues to go from strength-to-strength, with many of our initiatives receiving praise and being held up as best practice across the UK.

“We want people in in society to be able to grow old with dignity.

“The banner we have at council HQ includes photographs of people engaged in non-traditional older people activities that highlight how older people are keen to be active citizens, engaged in their communities, and to continue to live independent and meaningful lives as the aging process continues.”

Chair of Seniors Together, Catriona Mason, said: “Seniors Together is striving to make South Lanarkshire a great place to grow older.

“We’re sending out a message that older people are a benefit not a burden and we have time, expertise and energy to be an integral and useful part of society.”
